TATO VINEYARD
D.O ITATA COAST (GUARILIHUE)
This vineyard belongs to Tato Acuña´s family, our friend and sommelier, who has been a precursor of the wonderful terroir of Guarilihue area.
Guarilihue corresponds to one of the most beautiful Terroirs in Chile, lost in time, at the bottom of Itata, keeping the history of the Chilean wine-growing with very ancient, familiar, small vineyards, which have been inherited from generation to generation. Guarilihue does not continue with the regulations of industrial wine-growing.
The vineyard was planted on high density more than 70 years ago. It is worked in Gobelet and it was planted like a “rastafari” field blend, where several varieties live one next to the other, like Muscat, Country, Cinsault and Carignan. This vineyard has never had irrigation and it is worked by local farmers with its ancestral know how.
Guarilihue’s weather is coastal (32 kms. from the sea), semi warm, delivering enough heat for the maturation of these vines. The main climatic characteristic is the extraordinary acidity and pH together with an alcoholic grade that does not get over 14 grades, providing very fresh wines and of very much character.
The soils of these hills are of very old granite (200 to 300 million years), in a morphology of high hills. The high presence of silica, mica and oxidized iron give these soils, a unique demineralization value in Chile.
