Terra Azul
AZUL VINEYARD
D.O BIO BIO COSTA (PENCO)
Terra Azul is a Pinot noir vineyard fundamental for Clos de Fous . It was planted in 2010 on Schist soils, with a total of 8 hectares. The design of the vineyard was developed by Pedro, thinking on having the maximum expression of the rock together with the best available plants of Pinot Noir in Chile. The vineyard consists of 12 small barracks without irrigation. The chosen clonal material is Dijon (777.115. 828, Masal Gevrey Chambertin and Masal Vosne Romanee), which were planted like field blend: we never want to speak again about clones and we look for the complexity that a field blend can give the grapes.
The very cold climate is characterized by the proximity of the ocean, 7 kms. away. This generates cycles of slow development on the plant and together with controlled solar radiation it avoids developing high alcoholic grades and unbalanced grapes. The different local rainfall between 800 and 1,000 mm. per year, well distributed every month, allows not to irrigate the plants.
The vineyard’s soil is of Schist’s rock alteration, very old (over 250 million years) in a Toscano style hill morphology . The changeability of the soil is associated to the alteration of the Mother rock, going from very rocky sectors to areas of maximum alteration with great presence of mica. The planted root stock is essentially 110R in the rocky soils to look for the development of roots inside the rocks, and 101-14 in the deepest mica soils.
